From history to hero
Meet the real person who inspired this Super Stoic.

β‘ The Resilient Hero
Epictetus
Former slave and Stoic teacher Β· c. 55βc. 135 CE
π Their story
Epictetus was born into slavery and later became a beloved philosophy teacher. He taught that true freedom comes from understanding what you can and cannot control, then putting your energy only into the part that is truly yours.
π― What children learn
- βYou always control what you say, what you do and what you choose to care about.
- βBlaming others gives away your power; asking βWhat can I do next?β brings it back.
- βPractising small acts of self-control (like pausing before a snack) builds real strength.
- βFeeling upset is a signal to check whether you are trying to control the wrong thing.
- βMore stuff can mean more wants; choose fewer wants so your life feels lighter.
- βEven when externals change, your response is still a choice you can practise.
π Amazing facts
- β Epictetus did not write books himself. His student Arrian took careful notes of his lessons.
- β His classroom talks were later collected as the Discourses and Enchiridion.
- β Students travelled long distances to hear him speak in person.
- β His ideas influenced many later thinkers, including military leaders and modern therapists.
