Marcus Aurelius
Roman emperor and Stoic writer ยท 121โ180 CE
๐ Their story
Marcus Aurelius was a Roman emperor who kept a private notebook to remind himself how to stay calm, kind and fair, even when everything around him felt noisy and chaotic. He believed that while we can't control what happens, we can always practise choosing our response.
๐ฏ What children learn
- โYou can pause and take a breath before you react.
- โYou cannot control other people, only your own choices.
- โDoing the right thing matters more than being liked.
- โWriting down your thoughts can help you think more clearly.
- โBefore you share something, check that it is true and right.
- โChoose daily actions that match your values, not only your mood.
๐ Amazing facts
- โ Marcus wrote his famous notes, later called "Meditations", while travelling with the army.
- โ He probably never meant for his notebook to be published. It was like a private journal to himself.
- โ Even as emperor, he tried to live simply and focus on his duties.
- โ He often reminded himself that anger usually comes from forgetting how imperfect we all are.
